Technology and precision supporting the protection of the Santo Stefano Complex
In the heart of Bologna’s historic centre, in Piazza Santo Stefano, a Multitel MX 210 articulated aerial platform is being used in a protection and consolidation project at the Santo Stefano Complex, near the Church of the Crucifix.
On 22 January, AhRCOS, a company specialized in restoration and structural consolidation, announced the start of the installation of a temporary protective covering, describing it as “a quiet but essential intervention” to safeguard the building during the upcoming restoration work on the roofs. The structure does not conceal the monument but protects it, reducing exposure to weather conditions and ensuring controlled working conditions.
In such a delicate context, the choice of aerial platform plays a crucial role. AhRCOS, with the collaboration of Baschieri Noleggio, selected a Multitel MX 210 mounted on a 3.5-ton Isuzu truck, capable of combining compactness with operational performance—essential features when operating in a constrained urban environment and on a historic building of significant value.
With a maximum working height of 21.20 m, a horizontal outreach of 9.80 m, and a basket capacity of 200 kg, the machine allows operators to work with precision during the installation of the protective structure. The articulated configuration enables operators to bypass obstacles and position themselves accurately near the roofs and temporary structures, minimizing both footprint and impact on the surrounding area. The 400° turret rotation and the self-levelling basket with 90° + 90° rotation provide additional operational flexibility, even in complex logistical conditions typical of European historic centres.
The Multitel aluminium boom ensures rigidity and stability during movements, limiting flexing and oscillations and allowing precise control of manoeuvres. The ease of positioning and smooth operation, guaranteed by proportional electro-hydraulic controls, enabled the work to be carried out safely for the operators while ensuring maximum care for a historic asset of such importance. The MX 210 is also equipped with a telemetry system for GPS localization and remote diagnostics, an increasingly strategic tool for fleet management in the professional rental sector.
The MX 210 has been part of the Baschieri Noleggio Srl fleet for two years. The company, founded in 1998, specializes in the rental of aerial lifting and earthmoving equipment. Over time, the Bologna-based company has built a strong reputation based on the selection of leading manufacturers and a personalized service that supports customers from equipment selection through to after-sales assistance.
Today, Baschieri Noleggio’s Multitel fleet includes two MX 210 units, two MTE 270 units, one MZ 250 and one MX 250, reflecting a consolidated relationship and a strategy focused on offering high-quality equipment.
“Working in the historic centre of Bologna means operating with attention, respect and maximum precision,” comments Claudio Baschieri, owner of the company. “The MX 210 allows us to work safely and with great accuracy—essential characteristics when contributing to the preservation of heritage that spans centuries.”
The collaboration between Multitel and Baschieri Noleggio is managed by Filippo Rimondi, Multitel sales representative for the area. “Projects like this demonstrate how compact articulated platforms are strategic tools for protection, restoration and consolidation works in historic city centres,” he explains. “Technology, manoeuvrability and reliability become key elements when working on buildings of historical significance.”
The intervention in Piazza Santo Stefano highlights how technological innovation can discreetly yet fundamentally support heritage preservation activities, helping to safeguard the past and pass it on to the future.
