  • The new cable-stayed bridge over the Somes River sets a new standard for infrastructure in Romania, marking the most significant such development in Satu Mare in 40 years
  • The state of the art project integrates advanced technologies such as drone-mounted LIDAR, BIM 5D®, and machine control systems

STRABAG Romania as General Contractor along with the beneficiary Satu Mare Municipality Town Hall proudly celebrate of the new cable-stayed bridge over the Somes River in Satu Mare, marking a significant achievement in the region’s infrastructure development and a beacon of advanced engineering excellence.

With a length of 644 metres, the new bridge is one of the most complex and ambitious infrastructure projects in Romania, requiring exceptional precision and the expertise of highly specialised professionals. Upon completion, the Satu Mare bridge will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in Romania, thus consolidating its importance in the country’s modern infrastructure landscape. The construction project, worth approximately 200 million lei, began in May 2020 and has a 15-year warranty period.

The bridge features a harp-design supported by two 73-meter-high pylons and 56 high-strength steel cables. The cable-stayed assembly supporting the bridge weighs 227 tons and is engineered to bear a load of over 12,000 tons.

As part of its commitment to cutting-edge technology and precision engineering, STRABAG has implemented advanced solutions on the Ștrandului Street cable-stayed bridge over the Someș River. To ensure optimal alignment and tensioning of the stay cables, the team used drone-mounted LIDAR technology to accurately map the anchorage base plates within the bridge pylons. The resulting high-resolution data was processed over 48 hours using a high-performance server. This innovative approach highlights STRABAG’s commitment to delivering complex infrastructure projects with the highest standards of accuracy, safety, and technological excellence.

In line with STRABAG’s dedication to innovation and sustainability, the project also incorporated advanced construction methodologies, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) 5D® for integrated planning and execution. Additionally, machine control technologies and drone-based monitoring were employed to ensure precision and efficiency throughout the construction process.

Transilvania Bridge in Satu Mare represents our long-term commitment to building future-ready infrastructure solutions for Romania. Working on the largest infrastructure project in Satu Mare in over 40 years is a source of pride for the STRABAG team. With this achievement, STRABAG Romania reaffirms its role as a leader in delivering complex works across the country”, said Herbert Schuster, Commercial Subdivision Manager at STRABAG Romania.

This bridge means a lot to Satu Mare. The Transylvania Bridge is more than a structure made of concrete, steel and iron – it is a new symbol of the city of Satu Mare, an engineering marvel and an economic landmark for our entire town. The Transylvania Bridge is built to last, to unite and to inspire. I would like to thank STRABAG for the seriousness and commitment it has shown, even during the difficult moments of the project. It is clear that this is a company that takes its responsibility seriously,” said Gábor Kereskényi, Mayor of Satu Mare.

This project stands as the largest infrastructure effort in Satu Mare in the last four decades. The structure accommodates four traffic lanes, two pedestrian walkways, and a dedicated bicycle lane, facilitating seamless connectivity between the city’s northern and southern districts.
